Incompatible VGA Driver

Nowadays, there are more and more Linux Distros that offer a beauty Desktop. The most popular is 3D Desktop Effect. In Linux, we have Beryl, Compiz and the newest is Compiz Fusion that combine both of beryl and compiz.
Of course our VGA card must be compatible with 3D. And the more important is the driver of the VGA. For the latest produk may not have an important problem with this. Cause the latest distro commonly support it. But what about the old one?
After you've got the driver, you suppose to install it, right? But this time I won't explain how to install the driver.
I'd like to share my experience if we got the wrong driver. The easiest way to know whether our installation success or not is: Can you access the GUI mode? If the answer is no, then you got failed. But don't worry, we still can fixed the configuration even with the text mode.

Here's the way:

  • First, you need to turn the X server off with this command.
  • # init 3

  • Then, edit the configuration with vi editor.
  • # vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  • Find the row below.
  • Section "Device"
    Identifier "Videocard0"
    Driver"xxx"

  • Change the "xxx" value into "vesa". The word xxx I mean with every words except vesa. Because vesa is the default driver in linux.

  • Then exit from the editor and don't forget to save it.

  • The last step is turn the X server on.
  • # init 5

I've tried it in OpenSUSE, PClinuxOS and Ubuntu. And it works.
    Now, this is your turn.
You just need to find another compatible VGA driver again. :)

    Linux Startup

It's just like startup folder in windows. The function is to make a program or a script run automatically if the computer gets up.
    1. In KDE

    2. We just make a shortcut of program or script we want to. Then put the shortcut in this folder /home/username/.KDE/Autostart/

    3. In Gnome

    4. The step is like in the KDE desktop. We need the shortcut first. Then put the shortcut in folder /etc/xdg/autostart/
